Project Overview
cali

The 67,000-square-foot expansion to the Sutter Medical Center of Santa Rosa is a three-story wing of the main building that will add 40 licensed private-room beds, two operating rooms, an endoscopy unit, 20 intensive care unit beds, and 11 post-anaesthesia care unit bays to the Medical Center.

This expansion is designed to meet the growing healthcare needs of the Santa Rosa community, providing state-of-the-art facilities that support advanced medical care. The new wing will feature modern amenities and technologies, ensuring a comfortable and efficient environment for both patients and healthcare providers. The project also includes sustainable design elements aimed at minimizing environmental impact, such as energy-efficient systems and green building materials.

E
Engeo's Role

ENGEO played a pivotal role in the expansion of the Sutter Medical Center of Santa Rosa. As part of the design team, ENGEO utilized lean design and integrated project delivery methods, along with advanced building technologies, to enhance efficiencies and optimize project outcomes. Our contributions included addressing geotechnical hazards such as moderate liquefaction and seismic softening potential, as well as compressible soil, ensuring a streamlined construction schedule and cost-effective solutions.

C
Challenges & Solutions

One of the primary challenges encountered during the expansion was the geotechnical instability inherent to the region. The project site exhibited moderate liquefaction and seismic softening potential, coupled with compressible soil—conditions that posed significant risks to structural integrity during seismic events.

To address these challenges, ENGEO implemented a robust earthquake engineering strategy. This involved a comprehensive geotechnical investigation to assess soil behavior under seismic loads.

Furthermore, detailed seismic hazard analysis was conducted to inform the structural design, ensuring that the new facilities would endure potential earthquake forces and maintain operational integrity following seismic events.

ENGEO’s innovative approach to earthquake engineering not only addressed the immediate geotechnical hazards but also contributed to the overall resilience and safety of the Sutter Medical Center expansion, ensuring the new addition can endure and function during and after seismic disturbances.
