Project Overview
cali

The Sepulveda Adobe historic structure, located within Malibu Creek State Park, burned down in the Malibu fire in 2021. A hazardous building materials survey indicated the presence of lead-based paint used on the structure, which subsequently was detected in surficial soil samples.

E
Engeo's Role

Our role was to screen excavated soil with an XRF analyzer to preliminary assess remediation activities and subsequently collect confirmation lead samples around the perimeter of the structure in accordance with state and local standards following removal of building debris. We performed observation, screening, and sampling services during the excavation of material around the base of the Sepulveda Adobe structure. We coordinated with the California State Parks project manager, the demolition contractor, site archeologist, and site Native American monitor to direct removal of lead-impacted soil while preserving the remaining historic structure.  We additionally performed sample data analysis for both cleanup confirmation and waste characterization.

C
Challenges & Solutions

One of the primary challenges was ensuring the safe removal of lead-impacted soil while preserving the remaining historic structure and artifacts. To address this, we worked closely with various stakeholders, including the California State Parks project manager, the demolition contractor, site archeologist, and site Native American monitor. This collaboration ensured that the excavation and removal processes were conducted safely and efficiently, adhering to all relevant state and local standards.
