Intermodal Transit

The project included the relocation of active track lines, grade separation, and roadway and parking improvements for the almost 150-year-old railroad facility.

The Intermodal Transit Facility was a project of great regional significance. It was envisioned as a regional transportation hub that incorporated high levels of transit services and support amenities for both intercity and commuter passengers. Modes of transportation at the facility include long-distance passenger rail, regional rail, light rail transit, intercity bus, local bus, charters, rental services, bicycles, pedestrians and automobiles.

The Intermodal project created a state-of-the-art regional transportation facility that meets the needs of transit users and operators through the year 2025 and beyond. The track relocation improved the mainline heavy rail capacity and reliability, both passenger and freight, by reconfiguring and relocating the main line and platform tracks through the site.

Engeo's Role

2014 ACEC Engineering Excellence Merit Award

ENGEO provided work plan development, subsurface field exploration, laboratory testing, data analysis and conclusions, and report preparation for the project that will create a modern transportation hub in downtown Sacramento to link Amtrak Rail and Thruway Bus Services, Sacramento Regional Transit’s Light Rail, and Union Pacific freight rail.

C
Challenges

Geotechnical challenges included mitigation of potential settlement associated with the presence of existing fills up to 13 feet deep, tunnel excavations with jet grouted bottoms in lieu of dewatering, and deep soil mixing with cement grout at the east and west track connections to the existing mainline tracks.
